History Turns into History

Throughout my school years, my history teachers taught me that history was a boring subject. Of course, that was my own impression. But as more “history” was added to my own life, I found myself becoming a history enthusiast. If someone had told my school-age self that one day I would happily spend my salary on a car and driver, and brave the 40-plus-degree heat of the Taklamakan Desert just to see the ruins of Gaochang—once a great city—I would have laughed out loud.

Every time I stand on the ground of a historical site, I am reminded of Psalm 103:15–19.

The life of mortals is like grass,
    they flourish like a flower of the field;
The wind blows over it and it is gone,
    and its place remembers it no more.
But from everlasting to everlasting
    the Lord’s love is with those who fear him,
    and his righteousness with their children’s children—
with those who keep his covenant
    and remember to obey his precepts.
The Lord has established his throne in heaven,
    and his kingdom rules over all.
